Innovation & Technology:

From Past to Future

From humble beginnings to becoming a beacon of industry innovation, ‘portier’s journey is a testament to continuous evolution and commitment to technological advancement.

Development History

From its inception as a humble PC training provider to becoming a leader in lock management solutions, ‘portier’s journey is a testament to innovation and growth. Established in 1987 as “Computer-Schulung Harf-Stüer,” we initially focused on open courses and PC training in Cologne-Porz. The move to Brühl in 1991 marked the beginning of a new era, laying the groundwork for what would become ‘portier’.

The transformative year of 1992 saw our first foray into lock management software with a programming assignment for Kaufhof Mannheim, leading to the birth of our original project named “Locker,” later known as “Schlüsselkasten.” This pivotal moment set the stage for ‘portier’s future.

By 1995, the Deutsche Telekom’s nationwide adoption of “Schlüsselkasten” underscored our potential. The transition to a Windows version in 1996 and the subsequent rebranding to “portier” solidified our position in the market. The following years were marked by significant partnerships and decisions by major retailers and manufacturers, such as Kaufhof AG in 1997, to adopt ‘portier’ solutions, reflecting our growing influence and reliability in lock system management.

Technological Milestones

‘portier’s evolution is dotted with milestones that reflect our pioneering spirit and commitment to setting industry standards. The protection of the portier® trademark in 1998, both domestically and internationally, was a crucial step in our brand’s journey.

The late ’90s and early 2000s were characterized by breakthroughs in software compatibility and planning tools, notably the introduction of portierPlan in 1999, designed to familiarize dealers with our software. This period also saw ‘portier’ forming strategic partnerships with leading lock manufacturers like CES, DOM, and WINKHAUS, further cementing our role in the industry.

A significant advancement came in 2003, with the development of the portier-XML exchange format, a collaborative effort with CES, DOM, and WINKHAUS. This standard is still in use today, facilitating optimal data exchange between systems.

The adoption of digital ordering processes in 2004, with secure 256-bit encryption, marked ‘portier’s entry into B2B digital commerce. Our international expansion began in earnest in 2006, starting with the Netherlands in collaboration with NEMEF, and growing to include partnerships and clients globally—from RWE, E.ON, Mercedes, and Porsche, to name a few, expanding our reach to universities, airports, football stadiums, and beyond.

‘portier’s development history and technological milestones underscore our enduring commitment to innovation, security, and excellence in lock management solutions. Our journey from modest beginnings to a comprehensive suite of products that set industry benchmarks illustrates ‘portier’s pivotal role in advancing lock system management worldwide.
